Faith Only

In “The Standard Manual for Baptist Churches” by Edward Hiscox, on page 62, we find the following statement: “We believe the Scriptures teach that the great gospel blessings which Christ secures to such as believe in him is justification; that justification includes the pardon of sin, and the gift of eternal life on the principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in Christ.” On page 64, “We believe the Scriptures teach that repentance and faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in the soul by the regenerating Spirit of God.”

In the 1801 edition of the “Hymn Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church that contain “The Ritual, the General Rules and Articles of Religion of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South” the following is found on page 731, “Wherefore that we are justified by faith only is a most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort.”

The same statement is found on page 71 of the 1956 edition of “Doctrines and Discipline of theMethodistChurch.”

The same statement is found on page 67 of the 1960 edition of “Doctrines and Discipline of theMethodistChurch.”
