IT IS SO EASY
T. PIERCE BROWN
If every one who claims to be a member of the Lord’s church were to give five cents a day to get the gospel to every person in every nation in the world, at least $30,000,000 per year would be available. If every person would only help to convert one person per year, the church would double its membership each year, and in a few short years every person in the world would be a Christian. We have heard and used such statements for many years.
Is it possible that we have developed a Psychological Barrier Syndrome (if you do not have some sort of syndrome, you are not a part of the in-crowd today), by thinking of how little we would need to do to accomplish some great task, and have therefore felt, “If it takes so little to do it, my five cents will not be missed, so I will not give anything?” “If it takes such little effort to convert the whole world, no one will miss it if I do nothing at all.”
Do you realize that God can do more with an army of 300 who are willing to take Christ as Lord and make whatever sacrifice is needed than He can with an army of two million who are interested in how little they need to do? The modernist who claims that Jesus did not really multiply the loaves and fishes, but the multitudes who saw the unselfishness of the lad who was willing to share what he had and therefore all began to do likewise make a fatal mistake. One part of that fatal mistake is in the assumption that man can do by himself all that needs to be done if he will but apply himself. As is the case with almost every false doctrine, it is either almost true, or there is enough truth connected to it to make it interesting, and enough lie in it to condemn a person’s soul. The real truth is that man by himself can do nothing, but when we are willing to be used of God by making whatever sacrifice is needed, God can find a way to multiply our seed for sowing in such a way that there actually is no real sacrifice at all, but we get back far more than we give. Jesus put it this way in Mt. 19:29, ” And every one that hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive a hundred fold, and shall inherit eternal life.” I cannot but wonder how many of us really believe 2 COR. 9:10-11, “And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness: ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God.”
What about this challenge: If you realize how easy it would be if everyone would do just as little as you are doing, why not increase what you are doing (or giving) so that it seems to be a sacrifice, and at that moment, at least, is difficult for you. Then find out the reality–what God can actually do with you when you have taken Him at His word and acted upon it.
